How do you distribute videos online?

We’ve been doing a lot more work with video for clients here at Marketing Latinos. We’ve started branching out into political videos for local candidates besides the usual promotional videos for people.

To say that it’s been a learning experience would be an understatement.

The entire political realm is something that fascinates me from the spectator side but now also from the content producing side as well. More on that in a future post since the point of this post is to answer a common client question.

Lots of potential clients always ask the question: “How do you distribute videos online?”

There are many different options for distributing the videos. Most people know of the big dog “Youtube” and often they know of 1 or 2 other sites but the “how” question always remains.

Here are the how steps:

  1. Get thee an account. You need an account on the video content distribution sites before you can upload your video to them. There are hundreds of video distribution sites available. At the very least, I suggest:
    1. Youtube
    2. Vimeo
    3. Blip.tv
    4. Veoh
    5. Revver
    6. Metacafe
    7. Viddler
    8. Photobucket
    9. Flickr
    10. Myspace
    11. Facebook
  2. Upload your videos manually to each of the above sites making sure to link back to your website and include your keywords in the description of the video etc.
  3. After getting tired of step 2, get an account at an aggregator site like TubeMogul or Traffic Geyser and let the aggregator do the heavy lifting and distribute your video for you. You still need to ensure that you link back to your website and include your keywords in the description of the video etc. but you’re not spending 4 hours uploading videos one at a time.

There are a lot of nuances to consider at each site that you send your videos to.

Some sites work better for certain types of videos than others and there are a lot of niche sites that I did not include on the list at all simply because I didn’t wanted to keep this article relatively short.

For each video sharing site you need to consider lots of options as far as whether the site allows you to opt out of advertising etc. Certain sites, YouTube for example, will not let you opt out of advertising and will gladly showcase your competitor’s videos after your video plays.

The quality of the video player also varies from site to site, so you need to make sure to test your content on each of them to ensure the playback quality is acceptable to you. There is a school of thought that says no matter how ugly the player and how little traffic the site gets, there’s no such thing as a bad video sharing site. All I’ll say about that is “your mileage may vary” (YMMV).

Things to note:

  1. All of the video sharing sites listed on step 1 are free, although some of them have paid options.
  2. Tube Mogul has both free and paid levels. I have a free account and have not yet run into the need to upgrade, but YMMV
  3. Traffic Geyser is paid, I’ve never used it because Tube Mogul gets the job done for me.
  4. None of the links in this article are affiliate links
  5. I can create all these accounts for you and help you come up with a campaign. Contact Marketing Latinos to setup an appointment.
