The new FTC guidelines and you #pcpgh4
I was planning of posting a big “rah-rah podcamp was great” post today, but I got derailed. I was going through my emails and came across a report from Mike Young.
I felt it was more important for me to spread the word about his report first.
In case you don’t know who he is, Mike Young is a lawyer that specializes in internet business law. He has a great blog that I suggest you all read and subscribe to, even if you don’t sell anything online.
Until I read his report, I thought that the new FTC rules did not apply to me. I thought the new rules only applied if you sold weight loss products or if you sold “business opportunities” online. I was wrong.
I suggest you get Mike Young’s FTC Guidelines Report and read it since chances are the new rules apply to you or to something that you do.
In a nutshell, if you receive any sort of compensation or in kind considerations for a review you’ll need to disclose that fact in your review. For instance, if a brewery gives you some beer for you to review in a podcast, you’re legally required to disclose this information.
There are other nuances that you’ll need to discover for yourself in the report, so please read it and take it to heart. For the record, the report is free and I’m not being paid in any way shape or form to tell you about it.
