Customer Service Sales Training

IMG_0678We recently upgraded one of our computers. We had a PowerMac G5 that we ended up upgrading to a new iMac.

I won’t go into the funny Marissa Tomei impression from “My Cousin Vinnie” that Michelle did when we were at the store because that’s something that you had to have to seen to get the full flavor of.

Long story short, Michelle did a lot of research on the prices and the specs for the new versions of the iMac. She looked at several online stores and several local stores and found the best price for the computer at Fry’s in north Austin.

Since we live over 35 miles away from Fry’s we figured we should try to find a store closer to us that would price match the Fry’s price.

The closest store to us that sold iMacs is the Best Buy in San Marcos which is 14 miles from my house. We called and the lady that answered very politely said that they can’t price match with Fry’s because Fry’s is not in their immediate area. I told her that I was willing to buy today, so she suggested I call the Best Buy in south Austin (19 miles away) and see if they’d price match for us.

I called the south Austin store and yes, they’d price match and so we got in the car drove there and bought the computer.

Here’s the thing, why didn’t the San Marcos store price match? I’m glad that the store in Austin matched the price for us, but the store in Austin got the sale and not the San Marcos store.

I don’t know what kind of policies Best Buy has in place, but I think they should not have let our money go to a different store. I feel like they should’ve said “we don’t normally price match with them, but let me see what I can do” and then price matched or at least met us half way.

In case you’re wondering, the price difference was $1oo.

What do you think? Do you think the San Marcos store was not smart to send us to a different store to spend our money at?
