Copy blogger recently reminded of this quote from Buckminster Fuller:

“There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it’s going to be a butterfly” — Buckminster Fuller

I love that quote, specially as it applies to a budding business.

Think about it, most businesses, start off as hairy, ugly, caterpillars. Eventually, the caterpillar reaches a point where it can no longer sustain itself in it’s current form. It has to change in order to continue living.

When it reaches that point, the caterpillar creates a cocoon, and comes out from it transformed into something that you never would have expected. It’s a beautiful thing when you stop and think about it.

Just like the caterpillar, lots of businesses reach a point where they have to transform themselves if they want to continue to grow and expand.

The key lies in recognizing that your business has reached the point when it needs to “cocoon” and metamorphose into something else entirely.

Make sure that you stay out of your own way.

In a lot of expanding businesses, you the principal owner or partner, are the biggest obstacle to the transformation. It’s easy to get caught in “we’ve always done it like this” or “this works well, why change?” type of thinking.

Sometimes, changing for the better involves a fundamental change to how you do and how you acquire business.

Marketing Latinos right now is in a cocooning phase.

We haven’t quite started our metamorphosis, but we’re definitely changing.

How are we changing and why would you care?

We’re taking a more public role in our local community.

We’re putting together our first ever event, the Hays BOOTcamp, which will be free, all we ask for is that you RSVP, to attend and it’s going to rock. For this first event, I’ll be doing a review of one of our most successful client sites and will talk about what we did to help raise tens of thousands of dollars for a cause that we believe in.

I’ll be going over the specific steps that we took and how you can implement those same steps.

Sidenote: I would much rather we transform into a fire breathing dragon, but the caterpillar to fire breathing dragon metaphor doesn’t quite work.
