When not to tweet

13 March 2009 2 Comments

Believe it or not, there are actually times when you should not tweet.  I know, it seems really hard to believe, but there really are times when you should pay attention to what’s going in, instead of paying attention to the twitter feed.

Actually, let me rephrase that, there are times when updating your feed, as well as catching up on what’s going on in the feed can wait.  With today being the first day of SXSWi and the city of Austin crawling with geeks and other people in town for SXSW, Pubcon, BarCamp, and Lord knows what else is going on in Austin, here’s my short list of times when you shouldn’t tweet:

  1. When you’re driving
  2. When you’re driving a train (do you drive a train, or conduct a train?)
  3. When POTUS is giving the state of the union address
  4. When you’re a juror in a legal dispute
  5. When your boss is telling you that your performance is slipping
  6. When you’re supposed to be doing something else.
  7. When you could be getting intimate
  8. When you are being intimate
  9. At a dinner party where no one else is twittering
  10. On a date, in front of your date

What other times do you think you shouldn’t twitter?  Add them in the comments.

You also shouldn’t tweet when what you’re trying to communicate is blog worthy, blogable, or otherwise requiring more than 140 characters to get across. Multiple tweets in succession isn’t fun to dig through when I want to see what my friend’s stalker did this time.
