Why I love Twitter, part deux
Today’s episode of twitter love, which by the way sounds like it should be the title for a novel, comes from a brief discussion that I had with another user.
Apparently, there’s a university out there that has a degree in online marketing:

Well, I don’t think that a degree like that is really worth the time and effort that it will take to attain it.

By the time you graduate, the technology and techniques being taught in the school will be old. Anyone that has tried to sell anything online, knows that the techniques change quickly, mercilessly and without any sense for the past.
I feel that you can learn everything that you need to learn about online marketing without attending a university. What I do think has validity, is learning marketing per se, just take the online part out.
The tools for online marketing like squeeze pages, auto-responders, getting people to your webpages etc., you can and should learn, but there’s no need to attend a university to learn them.
I’m not discounting the value of college book learning, but like I said in my message, if you are any good at online marketing, in 3 years I feel like you should be able to make the $81k and have credentials that you can show. You’ll have a list of subscribers, list of customers and a series of products that people eagerly buy from you. Ultimately, I think employers are looking for results, a degree might open the door for you, but a proven track record is what gets you hired.
I don’t think that any institution as stodgy as a university can keep up with the pace of learning required to be current in a field as dynamic as online marketing.
What do you think about this?
