How to Use Twitter: How to Unfollow People That Don't Follow You

24 April 2009 No Comment

In case you don’t know, by default twitter allows you to follow up to 2000 people before limits start to kick in. Some of the limits are based on the number of followers that you have, and other limits are based on things like API calls and whatnot that only the uber-geeks among us understand.

Most people won’t care about the 2000 people follow limit since they have no interest in following more than that number anyway. Regardless, I think that a lot of people will want to know how to unfollow people that are not following them back. I also think that people will want to know how to tell if someone is following them back or not.

Here are the steps:

  • Log into your twitter account on the web
  • Click to view the list of people that you are following

follow

  • Look at the description of the people that you are following and if it says that you can send a “direct message” to them, they are following you back.

  • If you cannot send them a direct message, they are not following you back.

  • To unfollow, click on the button that says “remove”

unfollow

  • You’ll get a confirmation message that you are no longer following them.

confirm

That’s all there is to it. I don’t know if there’s an easier way to do this manually, but there are services out there that will do this for you for a nominal fee. I like doing this manually since from the page I can go look at someone’s profile and determine if I want to keep following them or not.
