The lingo dance

If you’re new to the social media scene, then you know that there are some terms that are thrown around by everyone as if everyone knows what those terms mean. Here’s a short list of terms and their definitions, mostly separated by the platform:

Myspace
Myspace was the original big social network, and a lot of the items on facebook got started on Myspace. I know friendster and others were first, but seriously Myspace was the first “BIG” social network. Having said that:

  • BulletinsThese are messages that you send out to all of your friends on Myspace. The recipients of the message can reply to you or forward these messages. You have to be someone’s friend to see their bulletin updates.
  • Customize You can customize the look and feel of your Myspace profile now using Myspace created themes. You used to have to find external tools to customize your profile.

On Twitter

  • RT This is an abbreviation for “retweet,” which means that someone tweets what you just tweeted.
  • “@ me” or “@ reply” That means to send a public reply to someone, or to someone’s attention.
  • DM or dm This means Direct Message, which is a private reply or direct message to another user. You can only send a direct message to people that are following you.

Facebook

  • The Wall This is the part of the profile where you write messages to, or comment on, things that you’re friends are doing.
  • Status The status is basically the facebook equivalent of a twitter message. In the update you make a quick comment or note about what you’re doing now. Unlike Twitter, you’re not limited to 140 characters, but you can feed your facebook status from Twitter.

This is just a short, quick and dirty list of definitions. Hopefully, this will help you as you move around on the social media sphere.
