WordPress: How expandable is it?

One of the best features of the WordPress application is that it is almost infinitely expandable. There exist a lot of different plugins and themes, both free and paid, that have been developed by the user community. These plugins and themes combine to allow the application to be almost infinitely expandable and customizable.

After you install the application, the basic structure and functionality of it is fairly limited. Out of the box, with the basic settings you can:

  1. Have multiple users
  2. Get a basic site up and running
  3. Change the main page of your installation
  4. Place links to other sites
  5. Change the look and feel between the current default view and the old default view
  6. Manage spam comments

Among other things.

That’s not a bad setup, out of the box without having to edit a single line of html or php code. However, if you take some time to expand the plugins, you can then add functionality to:

  1. Customize SEO settings
  2. Add banner ads
  3. Add customized movie and audio playback functionality
  4. Add a module that tells you who was born on any particular day
  5. Add contact forms
  6. Add twitter tools

And the list goes on and on. Through the use of different themes, you can change the look and feel of your site so that it looks like a news magazine site, or a blog, or a professional design showcase site. No matter what your business is, I feel confident that you can find a theme that is appropriate to showcase your business.

Ultimately, the only limit on WordPress are your needs. If you cannot find a theme or plugin that meets your needs, you can out source the creation of a theme and/or plugin on an outsource site and ultimately meet your needs like that.
