Billy Mays, a true master

29 July 2009 No Comment

Here’s the deal, I know this is late, but I got side tracked with other projects and somehow missed posting this. Billy Mays was probably the greatest pitchman of all time.  I’ve been an admirer of the guy for some time, but it wasn’t until the TV show “Pitchmen” hit the air that I became a true fan.

The show was awesome. The chemistry between Billy and Sully was awesome and the behind the scenes view of all that goes into making an infomercial was very educational.

I strongly feel that if you want to learn anything about marketing, product creation, product delivery, how to make people buy, how to pitch a product etc. you need to study Billy Mays.

There’s no way around it.

Here’s probably one of his last interviews. In it, Billy goes into some of the criteria that they look at when selecting a product/ inventor to work with.

Bottom line, for maximum impact in an infomercial, your product needs:

  • Mass market appeal
  • Need to be demonstrable
  • Solves a common problem
  • Have a Wow

Which is almost the direct opposite of what your product needs to be successful online.

Hats off to Billy. May he rest in peace.
