I really feel like 3.0 is the next step in the democratization of the web. Having said that, I have had issues after updating on 1, and only 1 of my sites (out of 30+ that I own and manage) to WordPress 3.0. Here are the details on the issues I was experiencing:

Symptoms:

• When uploading pictures to the affected site, the photo uploads without any problem. After it uploads, I go to the screen where I add my title, caption, description, etc. When I’m done with those preliminary steps, I click “Insert into post” and the screen goes blank. If I refresh, it just goes back to the photo upload screen. The photos are in the gallery, with the notes that I added, I just can’t insert them into the post using the quick buttons.
• The photo upload panel no longer shows up in a light box, but rather takes over the entire screen.
• I was unable to schedule posts in the edit post window
• I was also unable to add post tags in the edit post window

How I fixed it:

I disabled all of my plugins, and no longer had the issue. I then re-enabled my plugins, one by one, until the issue came back. I determined that HeadSpace2 was the plugin that was creating the issue.

I have deactivated Headspace2 until an update is released that addresses this issue. From what I saw in the forums, the developer of HeadSpace2 is aware of the issues and is working on a fix. I have reactivated all of my other plugins.

Take away lessons:

• First and foremost, don’t panic.
• Always check for plugin compatibility. If you have an issue after an upgrade, start with the simple things first. The simple things are to change your theme to the default theme, then deactivate all your plugins as I mention above. These are the easiest things to do and also the most likely to yield results.
• Always, always, always backup your database, just in case you need to rebuild your site from scratch.

This was one of those videos.

This guy named Hank Wasiak used to work at the ad agency featured in the TV show “Mad Men.” I’ve never seen the show, so I can’t attest as to whether being affiliated with that advertising agency is a good or bad thing. What I can attest to, is that Hank was a very lively and entertaining speaker.

I love that he talks about how new media is changing old media and how you can profit from that.

Basically, here are the steps:

1. Find companies that are already advertising on Google, Bing or whatever.
2. Go to the advertiser’s site, click around and find their contact information
3. Reach out to them and tell them why your blog/show would be a good fit for their ad money
4. Convince them that your channel is a good place for their ad. At the very least, get an affiliate deal with them
5. Popurls is your friend
6. Never underestimate the power of cold calling and asking people

Basically, Gary Vee says that you have to Google your way to the people that are advertising in your space.

Your website is really an information publishing portal, and seeing it as anything other than that, is a waste of time and resources. Having the latest and greatest in widgets, videos and the best web copy money can buy will be useless if you approach your website using old paradigms.

Your website is not for pushing your products, but for informing buyers about your products. To paraphrase Gary V, your website is not about selling, but rather it’s about helping people buy.

I’m actually going to go a step further and say that websites are media publishing portals. Your site should be a venue to publish your multimedia, your text based and photographic content. Your content is what you want your visitors to consume on their way to buying your product or service.

Your content is your product.

I always knew Darren from Problogger, and was surprised to see that DPS is a larger blog by comparison.

Nuggets from the video:

• Content – a blog needs content to get readers.
• Provide useful content to your audience to keep them coming back
• Have a clear idea of who your audience is
• It’s OK to be embarrassed by writing content for beginners
• Go back to the beginning and write content that solves problems
• It’s about quality and quantity
• The more posts, the better
• Promotion is necessary to get people to your blog
• Think laterally to get visitors to your site

There was a fire alarm during the presentation, which cut it short, but I think that what was covered was still good and worth the watch.
