I really feel like 3.0 is the next step in the democratization of the web. Having said that, I have had issues after updating on 1, and only 1 of my sites (out of 30+ that I own and manage) to WordPress 3.0. Here are the details on the issues I was experiencing:

Symptoms:

• When uploading pictures to the affected site, the photo uploads without any problem. After it uploads, I go to the screen where I add my title, caption, description, etc. When I’m done with those preliminary steps, I click “Insert into post” and the screen goes blank. If I refresh, it just goes back to the photo upload screen. The photos are in the gallery, with the notes that I added, I just can’t insert them into the post using the quick buttons.
• The photo upload panel no longer shows up in a light box, but rather takes over the entire screen.
• I was unable to schedule posts in the edit post window
• I was also unable to add post tags in the edit post window

How I fixed it:

I disabled all of my plugins, and no longer had the issue. I then re-enabled my plugins, one by one, until the issue came back. I determined that HeadSpace2 was the plugin that was creating the issue.

I have deactivated Headspace2 until an update is released that addresses this issue. From what I saw in the forums, the developer of HeadSpace2 is aware of the issues and is working on a fix. I have reactivated all of my other plugins.

Take away lessons:

• First and foremost, don’t panic.
• Always check for plugin compatibility. If you have an issue after an upgrade, start with the simple things first. The simple things are to change your theme to the default theme, then deactivate all your plugins as I mention above. These are the easiest things to do and also the most likely to yield results.
• Always, always, always backup your database, just in case you need to rebuild your site from scratch.

How To Delete Your Facebook Account

I just have a hard time believing that users/ members of the site are clamoring to have all of their data disseminated to infinity and beyond for advertising and other purposes. I could be wrong about that though.

Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of Facebook, at least in the early days of the website, demonstrated that he didn’t much care for the site user’s privacy. VentureBeat has an excerpt from an IM conversation attributed to a then 19 year old Zuckerberg in which he says:

Zuck: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard

Zuck: Just ask.

Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS

[Redacted Friend's Name]: What? How’d you manage that one?

Zuck: People just submitted it.

Zuck: I don’t know why.

Zuck: They “trust me”

So, apparently, since we trust Facebook with our information, we’re all “Dumb.” Sure, we can write these statements off as something that a teenager would say/ do. Surely, the more mature Zuckerberg wouldn’t feel that same way, right? I’m not entirely convinced that there’s been a complete change of heart.

Having said that, I want to point you to the instructions on how to permanently delete your profile. I’m not talking about deactivating your account, which basically means that FB can retain all your information, I’m talking delete, as in wipe out of the records and delete them from the Facebook servers.

I hope it deletes all the information, since you can’t really be sure that anything is ever really deleted online.

I haven’t deleted my profile yet, but I have removed and figured out how to lock it down as much as possible. Although having read why Leo Laporte says in that CNN article, I may need to consider deleting the profile in order to keep my other family members from doing something potentially bad.

CNN focuses on the advertising aspects of what he said, completely missing the part about mobile phones being the primary gateway to the internet for a lot of people in emerging economies.

Seeing as how Carlos Slim Helu (owner of Telefonos de Mexico) just unseated Bill Gates as the richest person on the planet, methinks that there may be something to this whole “mobile phones are big now thing.”

The highlights are:

• Mobile computing is growing 8x faster than desktop computing
• Half of all new internet connections worldwide occur on mobile devices
• People use their phones for more than just voice, voice is almost a secondary function of the phone
• The Google Nexus 1 has a 1 Ghz processor
• 1 out of every 6 minutes online is spent on a social network
• From the dawn of time to 2003, 5 exabytes of information was produced, now it takes 2 days to produce the same amount of data. In 2013, it’s projected to be 669 exabytes of data per day.

The future is mobile.

Cloud computing is the new model.

This was one of those videos.

This guy named Hank Wasiak used to work at the ad agency featured in the TV show “Mad Men.” I’ve never seen the show, so I can’t attest as to whether being affiliated with that advertising agency is a good or bad thing. What I can attest to, is that Hank was a very lively and entertaining speaker.

I love that he talks about how new media is changing old media and how you can profit from that.

Latin American airlines, do not charge baggage fees, fees for booking with a live agent nor fees for booking online. Latin American airlines do not try to nickel and dime you with fees at every turn. Yet somehow, as a group, they are more profitable.

Yes, we can give some credit to the economic downturn, and the race to the bottom of the airfare barrel that North American airlines are in, but it’s still an interesting prediction n’est pas?

I think that part of the difference lies is that air travel in Latin America is still a luxury good, like it was in the “good old days” of the airline business in North America. Since it’s a luxury good, airlines can actually charge what the ticket costs plus a bit more for a profit.

The current vp of EMEA, Blake Chandlee, was the first Facebook employee in London. He will be vice-president of sales for emerging markets. He will focus on Eastern Europe, Asia Pacific and Latin America.

I’m not sure how he will manage the Latin American market for Facebook from Europe, but that’s something that they’ll need to figure out. No word on if he speaks Spanish or not, but I would hope that Facebook thinks that speaking Spanish would be an important skill to have if you intend to grow the brand/ usage in Latin America.
