Are you a caterpillar or a butterfly?

Copy blogger recently reminded of this quote from Buckminster Fuller:
“There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it’s going to be a butterfly” — Buckminster Fuller
I love that quote, specially as it applies to a budding business.
Think about it, most businesses, start off as hairy, ugly, caterpillars. Eventually, the caterpillar reaches a point where it can no longer sustain itself in it’s current form. It has to change in order to continue living.
When it reaches that point, the caterpillar creates a cocoon, and comes out from it transformed into …

Marketing Minutes January 11, 2010

Today’s marketing minute is not a podcast, but it was recorded at Podcamp in Pittsburgh late last year. This footage was provided by the organizers and I’m making it available here for your viewing pleasure.
The presentation is titled: How to put up a WordPress Blog in 10 minutes or less.

I’m not happy about how I look in the video, but it is what it is.

Marketing Companies Attacking Spanish Language Market

I’m purposefully using the word “attack” and not “target.” I’ve been paying a lot more attention to how companies market, promote and sell goods to Spanish speaking markets and I’m not liking what I see.
One of the markets that I wanted to focus on with Marketing Latinos was helping companies and individuals reach Spanish speaking markets in a manner that is both respectful and profitable. Seems like no one else is really interested, if you go by the current commercials being aired on network tv.
Nothing irks me more than seeing …

How to use Facebook for Business

Today’s slideshare presenation is brought to you courtesy of Hubspot. They’re an inbound marketing firm based out of Boston, MA. I’m not selling anything from them, but I am working on my Hubspot inbound marketing certification.
Why am I working on a certification from Hubspot?
Because I like a lot of the things that they do as a company when it comes to inbound marketing.
Although I don’t entirely agree with everything that they point out in this slide presentation, I do think that there’s value in the thoughts expressed.
I …

Discover your passion

We’ve always been fascinated with people that are passionate about what they do. There’s just something infectious about their passion that just makes watching them do their work, or experiencing the fruits of their labor very enjoyable.
For instance, over on the BBC, they have this story about a director from Montevideo, Uruguay named Fede Alvarez . Fede got a $30 million deal to make a Hollywood movie but that’s not the interesting part of the story.
What’s interesting about this story, is that Fede got that job because he released …

Anything you say can and will be used against you

I subscribe to Tech Republic emails, mainly for my regular job, but also because I’m a geek and enjoy reading geeky things. Anyway, one of the topics that I get Tech Republic emails about are  employment and HR issues.
In one of those HR related Tech Republic emails, they were talking about how employers could be held liable for making employment decisions based on social networking profiles.
In the discussion forum about the topic, people were arguing for both sides.
One camp was arguing that information posted in the public domain, such …

How To Spot An SEO Scam

I recently wrote a post explaining what SEO, or Search Engine Optimization is and gave you a very brief outline of how SEO is done. Today, I’d originally planned to talk about SEM, aka Search Engine Marketing but I received an email that I just had to share with you first.
The email, is from someone that I’ve never heard of, came completely unsolicited and is by definition spam. Here’s the text of the email for your perusal:
We would like to get your website on first page of Google.
All of …

What is Search Engine Optimization?

Search Engine Optimization, also known as SEO, is essentially part art and part science. Let me give you my definition of it, and a brief description of how it’s done rather than regurgitating or simply posting someone else’s definition.
Before I go into my definition, I want to make sure that I mention what the search engine’s job is. The search engine’s job is to find the content that most closely matches and is most relevant to what the person sitting at the computer is searching is looking for.
How search engines …

Local Retail, As We Knew It, Is Dead

In this marketing minute video, I examine the question of how a local retailer can compete with an online retailer. It’s a very simple thing, but it can potentially help a local retailer book additional sales.’

What do you think?
